Geothermal Pools in Iceland
Since the settlement of Iceland in approximately 870 to 930 CE, geothermally heated hot tubs, pools, and natural hot springs have been a huge part of Iceland's culture. Partially due to its harsh climate, and partially due to their many health benefits, Icelanders have been bathing in warm mineral water as a method to de-stress and relaxe for centuries. That’s what we’re here to discover and talk about today, the geothermal pools in Iceland: filled with warm, cosy, and mineral rich waters all year round.
Iceland’s geothermal swimming pools are culturally considered some of the most important places to socialize and unwind.
What really makes the geothermal pools in Iceland so amazing is that they are naturally heated year round. Imagine getting to sit in a naturally heated hot spring on a frosty winter night. Snowflakes float down to your eyelashes while you gaze out into the night sky, looking for the Northern Lights. Trust us, it is nothing short of incredible!
What are geothermal pools in Iceland and how do they work?
Iceland’s geothermal pools are bodies of water which are sometimes spring fed, sometimes ocean fed, sometimes a mixture of both. These pools and hot tubs are then naturally heated using Iceland’s unique volcanic activity under the earth. Most of these geothermal pools, baths, rivers, hot tubs, and “hot pots” are located outdoors, and integrated with nature. Many also feature saunas and steam rooms, or spas.
Here’s a list of some of the health benefits associated with bathing in Iceland’s geothermal pools:
Anti-aging: Due to minerals found in the waters, bathing in a hot spring can increase the production of collagen and tighten the elastin located in the second layer of your skin. We’re talking about minerals such as calcium, lithium, magnesium and radium. These can leave your skin looking firmer and therefore more youthful. These minerals are also effective against dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis.
Acne control: Many of Iceland's hot springs have a high sulfur content, due to the geothermal heating and volcanic activity. Therefore, bathing in these geothermal hot springs is a fantastic method to treat acne. To begin, the warm temperature of the water and steam can help open your pores and allow them to unclog. This also helps them absorb minerals to combat bacterias. Additionally, sulfuric acid is a main ingredient in many acne treatments and creams. These geothermal hot springs and pools are RICH in sulfuric acid! This means that these warm waters also act as a natural toner for problem skin.
Respiratory health: Sulphur is known to help treat many respiratory problems, including asthma. It may also help clear excess mucus from your lungs, leaving your breath passages open and free for more clean oxygen.
Pain relief and increased blood circulation: Heat therapy is a very popular and helpful way to allow your body to release tension and increase blood circulation! This allows your blood to supply extra nutrients to problem areas. Of course, its best to pair this with cold therapy as well, if you’re looking for more long term healing and pain relief.
