How to Maintain Your Wellness Retreat at Home
Have you ever noticed that when you return home from your yoga retreat, it can easily feel that you’ve returned to life as normal. And let’s be honest, you went on your yoga retreat to relax and unplug. The question is, how do we maintain a lifestyle of relaxation and spiritual connection when we return home from our retreat? Here’s a blog post all about how to maintain a wellness retreat at home.
These 5 steps are going to be key to bring home the mental clarity and relaxation you’re seeking to maintain at home.
Feeling the need to maintain connection with yourself beyond just your wellness retreat is normal and a great way to begin integrating awesome new habits into your life! Here are 5 habits you can easily integrate into your life. For the days following your getaway, or to reset your lifestyle habits at home for a DIY wellness retreat.
In no particular order at all, this list of 5 habits to bring your yoga or wellness retreat home with you was curated so you can maintain a lifestyle and mindset that’s clear and relaxed.
First up, small daily routines to keep you in remembrance.
Small daily routines don't need to be difficult, they're about listening to yourself and regularly showing up through little acts of self love.
For example, notice the little things you do while on your yoga retreat or vacation... Perhaps you noticed yourself always doing cat stretches for 5 minutes before getting out of bed, or maybe you LOVED using the jade face roller that came with your resort stay.
Don't let these things go! Bring the little routine home with you, and let it be an easy way to stay grounded in self love and inner peace, which is all you really need.
Next up, indulge a little.
While this isn't true for everyone, most of us don't indulge enough. And this doesn't necessarily mean "eat more chocolate"...
While you were on the retreat, you probably splurged and enjoyed more unique and special things. Think about this and find ways to bring little indulgences back home with you.
For example, keep sparkling water at your home to drink with fruit out of a wine glass... or reward yourself weekly with a yummy smelling oil massage (you can do self massage too).
Again, it's ALL about self love and slowing down to savor your life.
Third: bask in sunlight!
You might not realize this, but sunlight is incredibly important for both our mental and physical health!
We all know the sun offers us vitamin D, which is incredibly important for immune system strength — but did you know it also plays a huge factor in creating serotonin in the brain?
Serotonin is often considered a happy hormone, and incredibly necessary for combatting depression. If you work in an office, this is especially helpful.
On our retreats, many of our guests spend more time connecting with nature than they do at home. So, try to give yourself a few moments each day to connect with nature and bask in some sunlight.
Just 15 minutes each day can make a world of difference!
Fourth, try breathing more regularly.
You may remember practicing breath exercises during your yoga retreat practices. But did you know you don't have to do a whole yoga practice in order to receive the benefits of breath work?
Controlling your breath communicates with your body's hormone secretion, and can GREATLY assist with controlling stress and regulating your heart rate. Just 5 minutes of breath work can offer excellent side effects!
Let's say you're driving to work and there's surprise traffic— you begin feeling stressed. By choosing to practice this stress relieving, "rest and digest" breath work pattern, you can bring yourself back to a restful mind state, and allow your body to lower your heart rate.
Inhale 4 counts — HOLD 4 counts — Exhale 8 counts — HOLD 4 counts.
The best part about breath work is that any small practice can help lower stress, and you can do it anywhere. Even between meetings or phone calls at work, or at your desk.
Finally, drink more water!
It's not news that our bodies need water, we're made of over 70% water!
Our brains are also dominantly made of water— which means that hydration is KEY to healthy brain function, body lubrication, and overall health and wellbeing.
When you're regularly practicing yoga, doing outdoor activities, or staying in a warmer environment, its much easier to remember to drink water.
Sadly, it's a basic habit we all too often forget the moment we get home.
Start easy! Every morning before breakfast, drink a full two glasses (16oz) of water. That will start your day off right!
These 5 easy steps will help you bring your wellness retreat at home, maintaining clarity of mind, relaxation, and a child-like sense of wonder.
While this list isn’t extensive, it does showcase 5 of the best habits you can integrate into your life to bring home your wellness retreat.
